Coming off the feed reader, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are coming back to late night January 7th, following the lead of Jay Leno, Conan O'brien, and David Letterman. Celebrity of the year 2007 winner* Colbert and Stewart are both WGA members, and I've heard the WGA isn't too happy.
So, the question is, does that make them scabs?
I'm going with yes and no. They're also SAG members and Executive Producers who don't want to loose viewership. Not that those are good reasons...but awareness, which brings me to no.
What the strike has been missing is commentary. These are the guys to do it. They've been reluctant to give interviews (they've fought for their crew to continue to get paid during the strike) - but with the strike not at the front of viewer and fans minds (it's just past November sweeps; the absence of new shows won't make an impact until mid April.) - I think the WGA needs Stewart and Colbert out there talking about this front and center - and this is just the way to do it. Stewart is also slated to host the Oscars so that's yet another opportunity to discuss the WGA struggle. I think Stewart and Colbert are just the right guys to cross this delicate line - I know they're on the side of the writers.
I've been waiting to see what these guys would do if they crossed the line. Will I watch. Yup. But I'm also advocating for the writers. I've stopped watching Internet shows all together. I don't watch reality TV shows. As of right now I'm boycotting Lifetime (just over Bloodties). I'm with the writers! The Daily Show and Colbert Writers Youtube videos were PRICELESS. :D Or worth 3 billion...depends on whose counting the change.
* In the article Jake Coyle states:
In early 2007, Colbert became the namesake of the new Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor "Americone Dream." This followed in a tradition of naming things after Colbert, like the mascot for the Saginaw Spirit, an Ontario Hockey League team, "Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle."
well, actually Saginaw Spirits are in Saginaw Michigan!
