It's been a while since I've taken the time to write a normal blog post. I live a lot of my life on Twitter. But I find myself needing to take a moment and decompress the events of the last couple of weeks, before my life picks up crazy busy again.
If you love things that sparkle... more on my book.
I haven't really spoken publicly about the book I'm writing. For obvious reasons. It's not finished. I have said that it's Young Adult fiction, with the same type of historical bent as the DiVinci Code. (Meaning set in the present with a look back at history.) I've gone further to say that if you things that sparkle... you'll love my book. There's an element of fantasy at play in what I am writing and I can't wait to share it with all of you Ranters some day.
At the end of June, I was completely stuck on the beginning of Chapter 8. It was going nowhere. I must have rewritten the opening lines thirty times. I was struggling with how to tie in what happens at the end of 7 with a smooth transition into 8. I was also freaking out about a meeting that in my head could have made or broken my book.
I had an important meeting with a secrete, shadowy society who are entrusted with the care of a Forbidden Building--the same Forbidden Building I am using as the setting for a lengthy scene in my book. The same scenes in which I had been stuck on.
I wrote what I thought the inside of the Forbidden Building might be like. More accurately, I wrote what I hopped I'd find once I got in there. I was playing with all the literary elements that all writers play with, symbolism, metaphor, moving the plot along, characterization. So the idea of walking into the Forbidden Building and it being nothing like I had written and then having to rewrite pages and pages of text weighed on my like a elephant stacked on top of a piano.
That wasn't the case. After meeting with the Shadowy Keepers of the Forbidden Building, I got a tour and discovered that with exception of a few minor details, everything I wrote was true to life. It was like I wrote it into existence or lived in it in another life. Either way, I have very little rewriting to do...and I have the blessing of the Shadowy Keepers to use it as a location. Thanks Keepers! :)
And yes, chapter 8 is coming along nicely.
